本剧讲述了1850年代淘金热期间，华裔澳大利亚人不为人知的经历。故事以真实事件为灵感，发生在1957年澳大利亚维多利亚州的巴拉瑞特。在那里，欧洲人、中国人和澳洲原住民（包含澳大利亚土著人和托雷斯海峡岛民）共同生活在一个西部边陲的小镇上，他们试图通过淘金致富。一名白人女性在此地遭 到谋杀，对凶手的追捕在不同群体间掀起了轩然大波。
